im new to bikes. which one first?
i have ridden scooters when i was younger basically so i get the jist of them i know how to handle one.
i have a full uk car license held for 4 years. im 21 years old. i now only have to work and travel within 15 miles of my home. im interested in getting a bike/scooter in stead of my car. just wondering if anyone can give me any advice on what to look for/ what tests i need to take before i can ride. i know i will have to do a cbt for anything over 50cc/30mph. and how hard is cbt/full uk test?
im looking for something 45 to 60mph but wouldn’t mind going up in the future. insurance seems expensive for me with no no claims on bike. so any advice appreciated.the cheapest option is preferable because most work i do is within 5 miles of my home so lemme know if you have any ideas.
ps any advice on equipment good too
I would recommend getting a 125cc bike. This will give you a good feel for whether you like biking and help you decide if you want to make the move up to a bigger bike. The CBT test itself is fairly straight forward and easy to pass, you will have to ride round a few cones in a car park then ride on the road for about 30 minutes with an instructor, nothing too hard and considering you can drive a car you will not need to worry about learning the laws of the road, you can just concentrate on getting to grips with controlling the bike.
You are correct, you will need to take a CBT practical test which will enable you to ride up to a 125cc bike with ‘L’ plates on. You will also need to take (and pass..) a bike specific theory test prior to the CBT. If after you have been riding the 125cc for a while you enjoy it, I would book your full test as soon as possible, as the test will be changing soon to make it much more comprehensive, i.e. a little harder to pass.
In terms of which bike to get, I would probably recommend a Honda cbr125, they are one of the best selling 125cc bikes in the UK, and for a good reason. There are loads around so parts are cheap, plus they are reliable. Its probably best to steer clear of Chinese import bikes, they may be cheap, but in my experience either don’t run very well to start with, or run then after some time develop several major flaws..
For you equipment, it is obviously a legal requirement to wear a helmet. There are many helmets around, I would not recommend getting a cheap helmet, a Shoei or Arai are the most expensive, but are also the best. in my opinion, its not really worth buying cheap protective gear, I guess I value my life a little too much to warrant saving 100 quid by buying a cheap lid (helmet). Also protective leather gloves and a jacket with armour are absolute must haves (most common brands are Dainese and Alpinestars, but there are plenty of good alternatives around). Remember, all the gear, all the time…
Best of luck with your biking adventure! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
